Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
Pragya Apps LLC ("Pragya Apps," "we," "us," or "our") builds learning software, including the Aksharamaala app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you and your family. If you have questions, contact us at support@pragya.app.
2. Who Aksharamaala is for
Aksharamaala is designed for learners of all ages — children, teens, and adults alike. During first-run setup, before any account is created or content is accessed, the app shows a "Who's learning today?" screen. The user selects one of two tiles — My child or Myself — and then picks from a dropdown:
- My child: an age in years (3–18)
- Myself: a birth year
Neither the age nor the birth year is stored anywhere — not on the device, not on our servers. The value is used only in memory during that setup session to determine whether parental consent is required, and is discarded once onboarding completes.
If the user selects My child, a parental consent block always appears, regardless of which age is selected. The user must confirm "I am a parent or guardian setting up this account for my child" before setup can continue. If the user selects Myself and the birth year indicates they are under 18 (using a conservative check: current year minus birth year minus one is less than 18), the app displays the message "Please ask a parent or guardian to finish setting up" and requires the same affirmative consent before continuing. If the birth year indicates age 18 or older, no consent block appears and setup continues directly. The Next button is disabled until all required conditions are met. This threshold applies universally — there is no region-specific variation.
Within the app, anyone can create a local learning profile (for example, a name and an avatar choice); creating more than one profile on the same device requires a Pro subscription. A profile's information and its progress stay on the device by default and sync to us only if the account holder signs in to an account on that device — see "Information we collect" (Section 3) below for exactly what that includes.
3. Information we collect
3.1 From your account
Whether you're learning for yourself or setting up the account for a child, we collect the same account-level information:
| Data | Collected when | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Account sign-up (Google or Apple sign-in) | Authenticate the account, communicate about the subscription |
| Name | Account sign-up | Personalize the account experience |
| Account identifier (Firebase UID) | Account sign-up | Identify the account server-side; keys synced progress data and subscription status |
| Subscription status, selected language | Account sign-up, and when a subscription is purchased or changed | Provide access to the language and features purchased |
3.2 From a child's profile
A child's profile name and avatar choice are stored only on the device, using local storage. This information is never sent to our servers and is not accessible to us.
Quiz and exercise results — balloons earned (the shared currency, earned across every activity, that unlocks new stages and features), stars earned in the Quiz feature specifically, unlocked levels, best scores per category, and usage streaks — also stay on the device unless the account holder is signed in to an account on that device. A child's profile created through the parent/guardian setup screen described in Section 2 above is not signed in by default, so its progress stays local unless the account holder later signs in (for example, from Settings). If the account holder is signed in, progress is synced to our servers, associated with the account holder's identifier and an internal profile reference — not the child's name or avatar — so that progress isn't lost if the app is reinstalled or used on a new device. Progress data, when it does sync, is not shared with any third party and is not used for advertising. This synced progress constitutes app activity data — it is used exclusively to preserve and restore your learning progress and for no other purpose.
3.3 Voice and microphone use
Some exercises use the device's microphone for speech-practice features. Audio is processed entirely by the device's own operating-system speech recognition (Apple's on-device recognition on iOS, Google's on Android). Our app receives only a text result of what was recognized — never the audio itself. We do not record, store, or transmit voice audio.
3.4 Purchase and subscription data
We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat associates purchases with the account holder's identifier, not with any child profile. See RevenueCat's own privacy policy for how they process this data on our behalf.
3.5 Push notifications
If you grant notification permission, the app receives a device push token (FCM registration token) generated by Firebase. This token is stored on our servers and used only to route push notifications to your device. It is not used for advertising or shared with third parties. You can revoke notification permission at any time through your device settings, which invalidates the token.
3.6 Trial eligibility
Free trial eligibility is enforced by Apple and Google at the platform level — typically one trial per Apple ID or Google account — as part of the subscription purchase flow described in our Terms of Service. We do not collect or track your email address for this purpose.
3.7 What we do not collect
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not serve behavioral or targeted advertising.
- We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
- We do not collect location data.
- We do not collect device identifiers used for advertising or cross-app tracking (such as advertising ID, IMEI, MAC address, SSID/BSSID, or SIM/build serial numbers) from any user.
4. Children's privacy (COPPA — United States)
Aksharamaala may be used by children under 13. The universal parental consent requirement described in Section 2 — covering all users under 18, regardless of device region — exceeds COPPA's minimum threshold of 13. No personal information is collected from a child under 13 without prior verifiable parental consent. A child's profile information and progress are handled as described in Section 3.2, "From a child's profile," above: name and avatar choice stay on the device and are never sent to us, and quiz/exercise progress (balloons, quiz stars, unlocked levels, streaks, category scores) stays on the device unless the account holder signs in to an account on that device, in which case it syncs under the account holder's identifier, not the child's name or avatar.
If we learn that personal information has been collected from a child in a way that requires parental consent we do not yet have, we will take steps to obtain that consent or delete the information. Parents can contact us at privacy@pragya.app to review, request deletion of, or ask questions about their child's account information at any time.
5. India — Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP)
DPDP is not yet fully in effect — its substantive provisions (notice, consent, security safeguards, and rules for processing children's data) begin taking effect May 13, 2027. Pragya Apps LLC is a Massachusetts, USA entity with no India-based entity. We'll assess whether and how DPDP applies to us, including on an extraterritorial basis, once those provisions take effect, and will revisit this section accordingly.
DPDP defines a "child" as anyone under 18. The universal parental consent requirement described in Section 2 — requiring a parent or guardian to complete setup for any user under 18, regardless of device region — is consistent with this definition. We do not direct tracking, behavioral monitoring, or targeted advertising at children, consistent with DPDP's requirements for processing children's data.
6. Your rights and choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export the personal information associated with your account, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@pragya.app. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law. To specifically request deletion of your account and associated data, see Delete your account.
7. Data retention
We retain account information, and synced quiz/exercise progress, for as long as the account is active. If an account or a child's profile is deleted, associated information (including synced progress for that profile) is removed from our systems within a reasonable period, except where retention is required for legal, tax, or fraud-prevention purposes.
We also hold a legacy record of email addresses collected under a previous version of our trial-eligibility system (see Section 3.5); no new email addresses are being added to it, and we intend to delete it as part of routine cleanup.
8. Data security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards (including those provided by Firebase and RevenueCat) to protect account information, and will notify affected users of a data breach as required by applicable law.
9. Third-party services
We use the following service providers to operate the app. Each processes data under their own privacy policy:
- Firebase (Google) — authentication and account data storage
- RevenueCat — subscription and purchase management
- Apple / Google — sign-in, and on-device speech recognition
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected with an updated date at the top of this page.
